Just tested out another new digital darkroom toy- Nik Software’s Dfine.  Dfine is an Aperture plug-in (also available for PhotoShop) that performs noise reduction.  I downloaded the free trial, and tested it out on a night shot that I took in Joshua Tree earlier this year.  It was a very long exposure to capture star trails.

Here is the before shot.  Note all of the tiny specks that are scattered around the image.  That’s noise.

And here is the image after using Dfine.  Note that the tiny specks are dramatically reduced.
