Lost Dreams

 

I’ve floated the Gunnison River from Escalante to Bridgport twice now, and both times we stopped at a house alongside the river.  This thing is a monster- simply an enormous two-story mansion, with a wide flat “yard” in front of it.

 

And clearly, completely abandoned.

 

This year we talked to some BLM Volunteers and they told us the story.  The house was owned by a local politician.  He built the huge house, and planted a huge crop of watermelons.  In his first year, he tried to float the melons downriver to market, but the raft broke apart, and the melons floated away- a complete loss.  He then lost the next election, left, and never returned.
