Every year I put together a calendar of my favorite images of the year. I order a couple for me, and one for my friend Bill. This year, Bill asked for more information about each photo to give it some context. And thus was born a recurring series on this blog. Every month I’ll take the photo from that month’s calendar page and tell the story behind it.
Last summer we visited my sister in McMinnville, Oregon. While there, we took an overnight trip in their pop-up trailer to Beverly Beach State Park. It was a great weekend, with unexpected sunshine on the coast. We waded out into the water while our kids frolicked in the surf.
Naturally, I had a camera with me. And a tripod. And some filters. This shot was using all of the above- including a polarizer and a blue-yellow polarizer. Rotating the filter adds a variable amount of blue or yellow to the photo. This shot dials up the yellow, but since yellow contrasts so sharply with blue (opposite sides of the color wheel, yadda, yadda, …) the blue in sky comes out too. I love the blending of the surf and the clouds.
