Our family has often visited Gateway Natural Area, a city-owned park in Poudre Canyon.  We’ve passed the steep trailhead of the Black Powder trail several times and wondered what was up there.  The visible sections of the trail feature a steep climb through a nondescript, uninviting pine forest.  Nate and I finally satisfied our curiosity last fall.  We were surprised to climb out of the forest into open rolling hills.  The upper trail featured cool breezes, waving grass, and great views in all directions.
