As “adventures” go, this one was pretty tame. We were in New Jersey, visiting my ailing mother-in-law (who passed away a few weeks later). Giving her a chance to rest, we drove just a few miles to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

The nice leafy green deciduous forest was easy on my eyes after twenty years of arid western woodlands. True to its name, it was quite swampy, and most of the trails were on boardwalks.

We saw snakes, frogs, turtles, birds, and flowers. A beautiful respite during a difficult time.
