When I’m asked about my favorite ski mountain in Colorado, the answer is always the same: Steamboat Springs. Is it the trails, the terrain? Nope, it’s the snow. To be clear, it’s not always good, but when it’s good, it’s spectacular. On this particular day, most of the mountain had been skied out. Even then I was able to find some thigh-deep powder off the beaten path. And the best was yet to come, as it started snowing. At first, it was a mix of snow and freezing rain. My mask glazed over pretty quickly, as shown in the photograph. But these are the days why I grow my beard long in the first place, and my face was warm. The precipitation switched overnight to all snow, with at least 15 fresh inches in the morning. It was another epic weekend at Steamboat, and this became my favorite image of the week.

Digital Darkroom. I bumped up contrast a bit and called it good. This one is about fun, not art.
WIRR stands for Weekly Image Rich Ruh. This regular feature on Das Has von Ruh will show and describe my favorite photo created during this weekly period. My weeks start on Mondays, as does the WIRR. I’m hoping to include commentary on the story, the setting, the specs, or the sentiments, depending on the circumstances.
