WIRR 2020, February Week 3

Scroll down to content

During my first few years at Esri, I got into the habit of taking a daily photo walk around Old Town. As work became busier, I started to neglect this habit. While my photography output dropped, I was surprised to find the same impact on my productivity and focus at work. Turns out my short walks were refreshing and reinvigorating, and one of my goals for 2020 was to reinstate them. One day in February, I walked through softly falling snow. I took a number of photos in Old Town Square, and as I walked back to the office, I noticed these footprints in Old Firehouse Alley. I loved the two sets of parallel footprints, and this became my favorite image of the week.

Digital Darkroom. My goal here was to emphasize the footprints. I made a small crop to remove some distracting elements in the upper left. After that I converted to black & white (Lightroom B&W 02 profile). I decreased the contrast dramatically (-60), then re-added a boost of clarity +35. I tapped up exposure and highlights to finish the image.

WIRR stands for Weekly Image Rich Ruh. This regular feature on Das Has von Ruh will show and describe my favorite photo created during this weekly period. My weeks start on Mondays, as does the WIRR. I’m hoping to include commentary on the story, the setting, the specs, or the sentiments, depending on the circumstances.
