WIRR 2020, October Week 4

Colorado has the best seasons, but they don’t always follow the traditional order. Summer, fall, and winter have swapped places multiple times in the last few months, sometimes on the same day. Yesterday I was wearing shorts and sitting in the sun, but less than two weeks before I was shoveling the foot of snow off the sidewalk. This leaf on my front yard, along with many of its brothers and sisters, didn’t get the memo that autumn was over, and fell off the tree in winter (but before summer- try to keep up). This became my favorite image of the week.

Digital Darkroom. Camera meters are often confused by scenes with lost of snow, and this one was no exception. I started by increasing exposure by more than a stop. I increased contrast and saturation to give the leaf more pop. I like the effect of increasing clarity on the leaf- it brought out extra details in the leaf’s veins. But I didn’t like the impact on the snow. To solve this I reduced clarity globally, and then painted over the leaf to restore and increase it.

WIRR stands for Weekly Image Rich Ruh. This regular feature on Das Has von Ruh will show and describe my favorite photo created during this weekly period. My weeks start on Mondays, as does the WIRR. I’m hoping to include commentary on the story, the setting, the specs, or the sentiments, depending on the circumstances.
