WIRR 2021, November Week 2

This particular day at work saw me taking a longer than usual afternoon walk. I walked north on Linden and then turned west on the Poudre River trail. I looped past the Poudre River Whitewater Park and then past Colorado State University’s Powerhouse Energy Campus, where I stopped to take some photos. I liked the look of the smooth white turbines rising over the brick building and this became my favorite image of the week.

Digital Darkroom. After converting to monochrome, I increased contrast by +28 and whites by +29. The real work was in two different masks.

The first mask was the brick. I increased exposure (+0.33) and whites (+30). I then decreased blacks (-22) and piled on the texture (+91). I wanted the bricks sharply contrasted with one another, as this played off nicely against the smooth white turbines.

For the sky, I wanted to bring out as much mood as possible. I increased highlights (+23) and whites (+28) and dropped shadows (-38) and blacks (-23)

I added some additional sharpening to finish the image.

WIRR stands for Weekly Image Rich Ruh. This regular feature on Das Has von Ruh will show and describe my favorite photo created during this weekly period. My weeks start on Mondays, as does the WIRR. I’m hoping to include commentary on the story, the setting, the specs, or the sentiments, depending on the circumstances.
